The Independence notepad - Current Photos as Indy gets underway

The Independence Notepad for January 30, 1998

Today is actually the last Saturday in January for 1998. We've already gone through three time changes since leaving Japan and I believe we still have a few more to go.

I'm am going to let the photos speak for themselves for today, and since there are 36 photos worth a thousand words each, that's enough reading for you in one Notepad.

(Above) Tag-out headquarters.

(Above) The Marines join Indy on her way to the Gulf and take part in the relay.

It was an SPF+1000 day as the sun roasted more than a few Sailors.

The CMC leading the pack. OK, just this group.

These are the guys who kept track of the laps, the one on the left there is thinking, "lets see, was that his 18th lap, orrrrrrr, 8th lap?"

(Above) The power of the wave.

First Place: MAIN STEAM

Seven members of the Engineering Department finished (above) the race in first place with a time of 1:52:19. Team members' include: DC3 Kevin Metcalf from Tucson, AZ; MM3 Greg Johnson from Henderson, NV; EM3 Felix Montoya from Floresville, Texas; EM3 Jose Badillo from Milwaukee, WI; FN Alex Ramirez from Parstall, Texas; Lt. j.g. Brad Alaniz from Minneapolis, MN; & Lt. Cmdr. Tony Wilson from Manito, IL.

As you may have noticed, the lack of connectivity has kept things a little backed up here. Even as I write this now we don't have the ability to upload it to Florida, just writing on faith and about 48 minutes of sleep in two days...

To jump right into things, today, as in yesterday, was an active day. The morning began with a relay marathon on the flight deck with more than 600 guys at one time or another getting in the race for a lap or two.

(Above) The first lap of the marathon. Can you find the CO?

Nothing but the sun above and the Indian Ocean below as the crewmembers race around Indy.

That's the Big XO getting ready for the outside pass on an unsuspecting shipmate.

"Gator" navigating his way through the course.

The "Squid Killers" (above) come in a close second.

Well, hopefully it won't be long before I can get this posted on the web, we're still down now, maybe things will be smoother tomorrow.
