Commander Hutcheson is a native of Horseheads, New York. He was commissioned in 1981
through the NROTC program at the University of Rochester, while earning a Bachelor of
Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After earning his wings in June of 1983, Commander Hutcheson reported to NAS Lemoore
for A-7E training and was subsequently assigned to VA-27 in March of 1984. While a member
of the "Royal Maces" he made two deployments to the Western Pacific/Indian
Ocean.
In May 1987, he reported to VA-122 as an A-7E Fleet Replacement Squadron instructor
pilot and Landing Signal Officer.
From February 1990 to December 1991, Commander Hutcheson was assigned to CVW-9 as Air
Wing staff LSO. During this period, he transitioned to the F/A-18 and deployed to the
Persian Gulf during the final stages of Desert Storm, flying several CAP sorties over
Baghdad in support of Coalition forces occupying southern Iraq.
In January 1992, Commander Hutcheson transferred to VFA-87 in Cecil Field, Florida for
as Maintenance and Operations department head. During this tour he was deployed onboard
USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71) to the Adriatic Sea to kick off Operation Deny Flight
flying no-fly zone sorties over Bosnia. That deployment also included a high speed transit
of the Suez Canal to conduct Operation Southern Watch missions in Iraq from the Red Sea.
Commander Hutcheson reported to the Naval War College in March of 1994, graduating in
March of 1995 with an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies. Subsequently, he was
assigned to the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in Washington D.C. from 1995 to
1997. During this tour he was a joint action officer involved in strategic policy and
international negotiations associated with the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Open
Skies Treaty.
After leaving Washington in March 1997, Commander Hutcheson reported to VFA-106 for
F/A-18 training en route to VFA-27 Executive Officer.
Commander Hutcheson has accumulated over 3,000 hours and 800 carrier arrested landings.
His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Air Medal, Navy
Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.
Commander Hutcheson is married to the former Janet Schaffer of Warsaw, Indiana. They
have two sons, Scott and Trevor.
