P. Volpe, Jr. VQ-5 DET 5 AMO email: pamoor52@cv62.navy.mil Date: April 2, 1998 Recently in Hangar Bay One, above the hum of compressors and yellow gear, VQ-5 DET 5 announced Aviation Electronics Technician 3rd Class Jason D. Everhart as the Junior Sailor of the Quarter for the first quarter of 1998.
Everhart feels the best leadership approach for a line shop supervisor is to work side-by-side with those he supervises. "I dont ask anyone to do anything I wouldnt do myself," Everhart said. "He (Everhart) understands his responsibilities, strives to motivate, and instill good qualities in his men," VQ-5 DET 5s Line Division Leading Petty Officer, Aviation Life Support Equipment-man 2nd Class Richard G. Quay of Pittsburgh, Penn. said. "He will do well and is on the road to become a Second Class Petty Officer." As a member of the ES-3A aircrew, Everhart has a strong opinion about flying. "I love it and want more of it." Everhart is also an Electronic Warfare Operator under instruction. Before every flight, Everhart takes time to study and prepare. But becoming an EWOP doesnt happen overnight, it requires countless hours of studying and memorizing the capabilities of possible hostile flight. Once airborne, an EWOP is responsible for the operation of several extremely complex electronic systems. Upon reaching his goal of becoming fully EWOP qualified, Everhart will be one of the primary nodes that provide Air Wing FIVE or the Joint Strike Package and the Battle Group Commander with "real time" indications and warnings. Whether Everhart is preparing a plane for launch or preparing for a flight, he continually displays motivation and instills the same in those around him. It was his continued dedication to honor service that enabled him to be selected as VQ-5 DET 5s choice for Junior Sailor of the Quarter.
