More than 200 Independence Sailors and Marines gathered together in Hangar Bay One Sunday to kick-off this year's Black History Month celebration.
Avionics Master Chief (AW) Ruel A. Odom, Carrier Air Wing Five's Command Master Chief, provided the opening speech. Odom has been in the Navy for more than 26 years. During these years of service, he's been a Command Master Chief at four different commands throughout the Navy.
"Black History Month is an annual observance of the past achievements and acts of kindness," said Odom.
Odom explained that when he was in grade school studying history during the 50's and 60's, many people who were a part of our American History weren't recognized yet.
"If we take a look at Black History, we are looking at history that is a part of all of us," Odom said.
Referring to the saying that America is considered a melting pot, Odom reminded the Sailors that they have a common heritage based on all communities coming together.
This year's theme, "African Americans in business - the path towards empowerment" was explained by the guest speaker, Capt. Mark R. Milliken, Independence Commanding Officer.
"What's nice about our business, the United States Navy, is that we are all in this together," said Milliken. "I know that the military in whole is light years ahead of the civilian sector when it comes to advancement and empowerment."
Following Milliken's remarks, the battle group commander, Rear Admiral Charles W. Moore, Jr. took the opportunity to give his thoughts on Black History Month.
"When I look back at my 33 years in the Navy, I have to say that I'm proud of the Navy in regards to what we have done in racial equality and equal opportunity," Moore said. "We know that every single man or woman that chooses to serve is equal in every respect, deserves the opportunity, and will make a contribution that will enhance our organization."
After the ceremony, the crew had a chance to participate in a "Hot shot shoot-out," which is one of many activities that are planned for this month. Tomorrow, SITE-TV will be showing the movie "Glory." Later this month, the I-5 team will be able to try their luck with a bingo night. The Gospel choir is planning a praise ceremony and televised historical readings are in the works.
The Black History Month committee will also have a pierside barbecue during the first port visit. The top three winners of all events this month will receive cash prizes as their reward for outstanding achievement.
