Capt. Mark Milliken, Commanding Officer, recently awarded Independence's Sailor and Petty Officer for the month of December in Auxiliary Conning.
Radioman Seaman Apprentice Matthew Wilson, from Dowagiac, Mich. and Aviation Boatswain's Mate Handler 2nd Class (AW) Glen Newbins, a native of Denver, Col. were awarded the honor of Sailor and Petty Officer of the Month, respectively, receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for their accomplishment.
Wilson, who has been on board more than nine months, works in the Automated Data Processing office. His responsibilities are to assure email and supply programs run smoothly.
"Wilson is one of the finest workers I have," DPCS (SW/AW) Darrell Miller of Harrisburg, Penn. said.
Wilson's immediate goals are to learn as much as possible in his rate and achieve the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer.
Newbins works on the flight deck where he's responsible for several yellow shirts (aircraft directors) and the movement of multi-million dollar aircraft.
"He's highly confident and a good leader," Ens. Scott Dancer of Jacksonville, Fla. said.
Dancer added that Newbins has been submitted to the Command Advancement Program for promotion to Petty Officer First Class.
Wilson was chosen best of 1,200 Sailors, while Newbins was selected from 400 Petty Officers who were eligible to be named Sailor and Petty Officer of the Month.
