may701.jpg (26304 bytes)"This Navy wide program gives Sailors and Marines the opportunity to look at what they have in their shops, their process and tools, and submit recommendations for improvement," Lt. Cmdr. Fernando Villanueva, Military Cash Awards Coordinator said.

Two years ago during exercise RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific), Canar devised a method to eliminate a step in troubleshooting an electronic countermeasure station used by the F/A-18 Hornet and F-14 Tomcat.

According to Canar a native of Charlottesville, Va., this improvement will save time and money for damaged parts occurred during troubleshooting.

"Canar’s suggestion went all the way up to NAVAIRSYSCOM (Naval Air Systems Command) where it was found to be valid," Villanueva said. "It will be implemented throughout the Navy."

Cash awards are based on the amount of savings to the Navy over a period of one year. Up to 10 percent is awarded from the total savings with a maximum of $25,000.

Canar said he’s happy the suggestion was approved and encourages Sailors and Marines to submit their ideas.
