Captain John C. Brandes, a native of Long Beach, California, graduated from the U. S. Naval academy in June 1971. Following commissioning, he attended nuclear power training at Mare Island, California and Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Upon completion of Naval Submarine school in November 1972, he reported to USS SARGO (SSN 583) where he served as Electrical Officer, Damage Control Assistant, and Main Propulsion Assistant.

In May 1976, Captain Brandes transferred to the staff of Commander Submarine Squadron THREE and served as Assistant Material Officer.

Following graduation from Submarine Officers' Advance Course in December 1978, Captain Brandes served as Engineer Officer on USS WILLIAM H. BATES (SSN 680) until February 1982.

From February 1982 to August 1984, he served on the staff of Commander Submarine Group FIVE as Material Officer.

His next assignment was as Executive Officer of USS RICHARD B. RUSSELL (SSN 687), where he served until December 1987.

Following Prospective Commanding Officer Training, Captain Brandes assumed command of USS WILLIAM H. BATES (SSN 680) and served in this position until June 1991. Captain Brandes reported to the staff of Submarine Squadron ELEVEN, where he served as the Deputy Commander for both Readiness and Training until December 1992.

He served next on the staff of the Director for Submarine Warfare, and his assignments included Executive Assistant to the Director. He was selected for a Federal Executive Fellowship, which he completed from August 1994 to June 1995.

From July 1995 to July 1997, Captain Brandes served as Commanding Officer of Naval Submarine School.

Captain Brandes is currently serving as Chief of Staff on the CTF 70, Commander Battle Force Seventh Fleet staff.

Captain Brandes received a Master of Science degree from the Catholic University of America. He also attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, as a national Security Fellow.

Captain Brandes' personal awards include the Legion of Merit (three awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation medal, and Navy Achievement Medal. He is authorized to wear the Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Battle "E" Ribbon, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Expert Rifleman Medal, and Expert Pistol Shot Medal.

Captain Brandes, his wife Kathy, and their two sons, John and Scott reside in Yokosuka, Japan.
